Coffee & Conversations

The Mollie Spencer Farm Coffee & Conversation event series features informal talks aimed at engaging with the community on issues related to environmental and wildlife preservation and animal welfare. These events take place at the farm throughout the year and feature local speakers. Previous Coffee & Conversation topics including planting pollinator gardens, supporting monarch migration, and equine fostering.

The Importance of Biodiversity

Saturday, March 23rd
9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

This informal Coffee & Conversation event will focus on the importance of biodiversity and how it impacts the health of our ecosystem. Marcus Long, Urban Soil Health Specialist for the Oklahoma Conservation Commission, and Sean Washington, Science Communicator with The Fit Naturalist, will discuss the concept of biodiversity and present conservation practices that help protect against biodiversity loss.

Raised Bed Gardening

Saturday, April 13th
9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

This Coffee & Conversation event will focus on gardening in raised beds. Local experts will discuss building raised beds, preparing healthy soil, and deciding what vegetables to plant and when to plant them. The event will include time for Q&A and a walk in the Mollie Spencer Farm vegetable garden!

Drip Irrigation

Saturday, April 13th
11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This event will feature Canadian County Master Gardener Carolyn Balson, who will present a thorough introduction to implementing drip irrigation in your garden, including demonstrations with hardware. The event will include time for Q&A and a walk in the Mollie Spencer Farm vegetable garden!

Beekeeping in Your Backyard

Saturday, May 11th
9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

This Coffee & Conversation event will focus on beekeeping in an urban setting. Local experts will talk about bee biology, including the different types of honey bees and their roles in the hive. They will then discuss the basics of beekeeping, bee safety, and hive maintenance. We will end with a Q&A session and the opportunity to view Mollie Spencer Farm bees in an observation hive!

Water Ecology

Saturday, May 18th
9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

This Coffee & Conversation event focusing on water ecology will feature experts discussing aquatic ecosystems and how plants and animals interact with each other in rivers, streams, and ponds. Mollie Spencer Farm staff will also speak about the improvements made at the farm to benefit the aquatic ecosystem on the property. The event will include time for Q&A and a walk around the Mollie Spencer Farm pond!
